Children with certain tooth problems may benefit from teeth retainers.
Teeth retainers are used in children primarily after they’ve had braces removed. Braces are used to straighten out teeth the may be crooked, or to help it come in straighter is they are already starting to shift. After the braces have done a majority of the work, the retainer will ensure that the bony enamel-coated structures stay straight.
If you think your child might need braces or a retainer, then you should take them to see an orthodontist. They will examine their mouth and decide if they need either, and what the course should be to get their chewers looking better and straighter. Generally, the earlier you do this, the better, because no one wants to have to still be wearing braces in college.
The retainer is a custom made piece of plastic and wire that fits into the child mouth easily. While it doesn’t help shift dentition all that much, it does help to hold them in place after they’ve already shifted due to wearing braces. Most children get there braces removed before they stop growing, and the retainers make sure the all those years of wearing braces pay off.
